
All men are dangerous, should be dangerous, formidable – empowered to protect and provide. The ultimate virtue of a good man is his capacity for self-control. A man who is not formidable is harmless, weak. It is not possible to determine whether a weak man is a good man–because there is no virtue behind his passivity. A good man offers containment, a weak man attempts to control. Containment provides space for the feminine to feel safe and authentic. The feminine tempers the dangerous by providing peace. Men require peace.
Violence is a language—one that men, across centuries and civilisations, have spoken fluently. Not by choice, but by necessity and instinct. The word itself is weighted, soaked in judgement, yet it has shaped history as much as diplomacy, intellect, or innovation. It has built nations and destroyed them. It has enforced laws, protected the innocent, and been wielded as both justice and tyranny.
Women struggle to grasp this relationship the way men do—not out of intellectual failure, but by evolutionary design. Their instincts are to nurture, agreeability, diplomacy. Even the most fiercely protective maternal instinct is defensive while protective, not driven by the same explosive, outward impulse. When men fight, it is often not required, it is demanded—a response deeper than morality, more urgent than rationale.
Society is quick to frame male violence in extremes—either as monstrous criminality or noble heroism. It punishes men for acting on violent instincts unless they serve the State. It glorifies those instincts when channelled into war or sanctioned retaliation. It condemns the individual man for striking out, yet praises the collective when violence aligns with political purpose. The hypocrisy is glaring, but goes unnoticed by those who benefit.
The middle classes are most at risk–caught between violence from above and below. The upper echelons wield monopolised violence–incarceration, enforcement, war. The lower tiers use it to survive–to flex, to elevate, to settle disputes. Only the middle classes are conditioned to reject violence. “It is never an acceptable response”–even when necessary. They are taught compliance. Restraint. Submission to rules the other tiers ignore.
There is no good and evil. These are merely differing perspectives of the same truth. Even a good man, a peaceful man, is within his rights to utterly destroy the one who would harm the people and things he loves.
So what does it mean when we, the civilised, deny the primal? When we insist that violence has no place among individuals, yet allow its unchecked reign within institutions? And more importantly—if male violence is innate, how should men understand it, wield it, suppress it?
These are questions I dare not answer, only ask. Because perhaps the most dangerous violence is not what men commit—but what they are told they must deny.

Men often repress their anima to strengthen their persona, creating a compensatory relationship between these aspects of the psyche.
